Natural and artificial lighting are a huge debate in the interior design world. Naturally lit homes are praised by homeowners because they lower their energy bills. When choosing windows to light a house, choose highly efficient glass that blocks solar heat to gain taking advantage of the daylight. Natural lightly is also healthier because artificial lighting can cause discomfort and glare to sleep deprivation and even cancer. Daylight affects the hormones in your system, much like an ecosystem, our bodies react to external stimuli. More specifically, daylight will inhibit the production of melatonin, which cycles our body. So, lighting is very important on where it is put and shown in every area of your home. That is all I have for my very last blog post. As always, stay functional and beautiful!

There are many, many, different styles of houses and homes, contemporary, classical, modern, art deco, country house, georgian, just to name a few. For this blog though, we are going to focus on two specifically, Victorian an Art Deco. Victorian homes, originally named Victorian style, is named after a time in history, the Victorian era when Queen Victoria ruled Britain in 1837. All pieces were made separately and usually the houses were built in terraces or as detached houses. The Victorian era is known for its love and remenisable revival of historic styles mixed with the introduction of middle east and Asian influences in furniture, fittings, and interior decoration. The Victorian era is how the United stated got it's original influence from the middle east and Asia. The Art Deco or the moderne style home is very updated and has developed greatly since 1930 when it migrated to the U.S. and Europe. When you hear Art Deco style home you think, " Well this house should have some good art then!" In fact most of the art styles are influenced from the various painting styles of the early twentieth century, ranging from Cubism to Italian Futurism. In the simplest way, the Art Deco styled home, really brought the modern style out of hiding and even influenced the art of the 1930's.
To give off the right atmosphere you need to know the right accents and colors to give off that comfortable or cold feel. Shades and tones do not only pertain to walls and the paint you choose, but fabrics, furniture, texture, color and decorative accents must all come together well. Yellow, orange, red and beige are regarded as warm hues that create a similar atmosphere to a summer day, while blue and grey base colors tend to make a room appear colder. Combine natural and artificial lighting for a very homey feel. Let the sun’s natural rays pass through windows with blinds or draped in curtains with a style, color and texture of your choice. Lastly, as an element of nature, wood is infused with an earthy earthy feel and gives off warmth with its classic charm, and rustic feel. You can incorporate wooden furniture, walls, ceilings and beams, and other structures made from this material in different areas of the room. I hope this helps if you struggle with the comfy, cozy atmosphere and you have taken something from this! As always stay beautiful and functional!
Art is such an important part of a room. Art can be a painting like in the photo on the right. Look closely at the painting or photo on the far right wall. You can see the subtle hint of the turquoise color that is lightly accented throughout the living space. Art accents do not always have to be photos or painting either. They can be large pieces of painted wood, rustic accents, or anything you would like to use to liven up your space. For example the photo on the left is not a painting or photo, they are using a large piece that is meant to stand out against the pale color scheme of the rest of the space. The piece is also larger than it's twin on the left of it, so it stands out from color and stature. Like I said the piece of art you choose can stand out or can subtly tie the room together with color, shape, texture, or overall look! Thank you for tuning in, one again! As always stay beautiful and functional.
Finding your color inspiration can be intimidating if you don't know what to look for. Color inspiration is a fancy way of saying, " What are your favorite colors to put together?" To find your color inspiration, go to your closet, and look at your color choices. In most cases, the colors you want to spend money on, and wear are usually your color inspirations. Also, you color inspiration says a lot about you psychologically. If you choose pastels, like the picture, you are naturally fun, open, and bubbly. If you choose colors more towards the darker side, you are most likely more closed off, or like being in your own company. Another psychological fact tied to your choice of room style is cleanliness. When your room is nice and tidy, you will notice you tend to be more active and motivated because your personal space is clean and open. If you choose to let your room be, less than clean, you are most likely to have low motivation and social skills. Thank you for tuning in and stay that way for my next upload! As always stay beautiful and functional!
Plants are a very overlooked accessory in a home. Would I like one large/medium plant? Or a few smaller plants to fit on a shelf or window seal as you see in the pictures above? After that you want to ask, would I like potted for free hanging plants? Would I like them to give off a certain smell, or none at all? Bathrooms are a big eye catcher in a house. The bathroom is the least thought of room in a house, so when it is clean with the right lighting, the right accessories, and the overall feel of that bathroom is a breath of fresh air, that is an accomplishment. As often as bathrooms are overlooked, architects and interior designer understand and remind just how important the loo is. Bathrooms mainly consist of light, neutral colors, open spaces, tile instead of carpet, and tiles on the wall instead of plain drywall for the condensation coast down and not cause mold. Bathrooms also have, mostly, natural lighting to bounce off of the light, neutral color to create a clean open feeling. Rustic living was a very in-style interior design in the early 2000's. Some say it is still in style, but it has to do with personal style. Rustic living is called just that because of the earthy tones, as you see in this two very different living spaces, and the use of the earth elements. These earth elements include wood, rock, natural lighting, or a natural flow of the three. Both of these living spaces have the combination of all three in complete harmony and flow. Both of these living spaces have natural wood, on the left it is refurbished wood, which is older wood that is reused and restored for another purpose. The living space of the right has a repeating bookshelf using painted wood to match the other light, earth tones to create harmony. These living spaces also use rock as a tie, the left living space as well as the right living space uses this rock around their fire place to bring notice to the centerpiece of the room. Lastly, these two living spaces use natural lighting to complete the earthy look. Rustic living is a design of the past, but a very needed style of today.
